A Healthier Way to Enjoy Trends and Social Media

Enjoy online culture while protecting your time, privacy and sense of self.

Smartphone and drink on a textured tabletop

Social platforms can help you discover music, books, creators, humour and communities. They can also make it easy to lose time or feel everyone else is doing life better. You do not have to quit the internet to build a healthier relationship with it.

Choose what earns your attention

Follow accounts that teach you something, make you laugh or help you feel connected. Mute accounts that repeatedly leave you anxious or inadequate.

Pause before joining a trend

Ask yourself: Is it safe? Does it fit my budget and values? Would I still want to do it if nobody saw it online? You can skip a trend without missing out on who you are.

Protect your privacy

  • Review who can see your posts and stories.
  • Avoid sharing live location details or identifying information about your school, workplace or home.
  • Ask friends before sharing photos or private messages involving them.
  • Be cautious with links and messages asking for passwords or verification codes.

Make scrolling more intentional

Try not opening social apps during study time or keeping your phone away while eating. Built-in screen-time tools may help, but focus on what you want more time for—not on a perfect number.

Keep offline life in view

Make room for hobbies, movement, sleep and face-to-face connection. Online inspiration is most useful when it supports your real life rather than making you feel you must perform it.
